Jesus talked of love in chapter 14 when he defined those who love Him as those who keep His commandments. Then He talked about bearing fruit as we are branches from His vine. Then He talked again about remaining in His love by keeping His commands. And then, in verse 16, He came back to the theme of bearing fruit. This isn’t bouncing between two topics, it’s all one topic. We love Him by following Him and keeping His commands. We bear fruit by following Him, loving Him and keeping His commands. Love, obedience and fruit should be the substance of our spiritual lives. It all comes from love. We obey and follow the Lord because we love Him. We bear fruit by loving others.
It’s easy to say and to sing that we love the Lord on Sunday mornings, but Jesus says the one who loves Him is the one who keeps His commandments. Does your life show that you love the Lord through your obedience to Him? What you do means more than what you say.
Does your life show that you love Jesus by keeping His commandments? Pray about it. Ask the Lord how you need to increase your obedience.
