Love and Unity in Christ – John 17:20-26

In this section of Jesus’ prayer, He prays for us – those who have not seen Him but believe because of what we have been told by His disciples. He prayed: “May they all be one, as You, Father, are in Me and I am in You. May they also be one in Us …” Jesus has taught about the unity of He and the Father, and here He actually includes us in this unity. We often read this as calling for unity within the body of Christ, the Church. While that is important, what Jesus is actually praying here is much more profound and meaningful. Jesus’ unity with the Father enabled Him to live in the world and do the Father’s will. This union of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and us enables us to do the Father’s will in our lives. It enables us to let Christ act through us. And that’s what lets “the world may know You have sent Me and have loved them as You have loved Me.” It is this unity that empowers us to live the life the Lord wants us to live.

The unity we have with the Father and Christ comes because the Holy Spirit links us to Christ. To maximize this union, we have to commit to do the Father’s will on Earth as Jesus did. That’s the way we experience the power of God within our lives.

Pray and thank God for the unity and the eternal life He has given you. Pray for a greater level of commitment to His will and that you may experience His power more in your life.
