The First Sign – ‘He displayed His glory’ – John 2:1-12

The conversation between Mary and Jesus is hard to understand because the original language is hard to translate. Scholars have debated what Jesus meant when he spoke to Mary. The words, originally written in Greek, literally mean “what to me and to you.” What is clear is that Jesus referred to His time, and that this marks the beginning of His public ministry. John tells us that this is His first sign. His disciples were probably following Him because of John’s statements about Him, the authoritative way He spoke and His general manner. But here, for the first time, Jesus “displayed His glory.” Here He showed them that He is not just a great teacher, a prophet. He is so much more. “He displayed His glory and His disciples believed in Him.” They will see many more miracles from Jesus, but this gives them an idea of who He is, and they responded with faith.

No better advice has ever been given than Mary’s words to the servants: “Do whatever He tells you.” Do whatever Jesus tells you. It’s that simple. He is our Lord. We are to do whatever He tells us. That is our way to light, to life, to joy.

What is Jesus telling you that you are reluctant to do? How will you obey Him?
