The Eternal Word – John 1:1-18

John imitated the beginning of Genesis: “In the beginning, God …”
“In the beginning was the Word” is not a very different meaning. In each case, The Bible is telling us that God existed before all creation, that Jesus existed before creation. It is hard for us to understand that God had no beginning and will have no end. Everything we have ever experienced had a beginning and an end. The Bible does not explain it to us, because we are not capable of understanding it. Scripture merely states and affirms this truth. John also tells us that not only was the Word with God but the Word was God. We also have trouble understanding this. How can the one God exist in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit? We cannot understand it. We have to accept that fully grasping the nature of an infinite God is beyond our finite minds. We serve a God who is beyond our capacity to understand or even imagine – a Lord truly worthy of our worship.

Verse 4 says that in Jesus was life. He is not only the agent of creation but also the source of life. What is the source of death? Sin. Sin leads death, but Christ gives us life. John says that this “life was the light of men.” Without Christ, we stumble around in darkness, heading toward death. With Him, we live in the light, full of life.

Have you accepted the light and life that Jesus offers you? If so, spend some time praising and thanking Him. If not, choose to do so now. You don’t have to stumble in darkness anymore.
