Equal with God – John 5:1-23

Jesus healed a man who had been sick 38 years. Rather than celebrate and praise God for this astounding miracle, the Pharisees were outraged that Jesus had told the man to pick up his mat on the Sabbath. When they confronted Jesus, He gave them something else to be concerned about. He told them more about whom they were opposing. They were not merely fighting against a prophet, but against the Son of God. Jesus talked about the unity of the Father and the Son and told them they would see more amazing things. He told them that the Father has given all judgment to the Son and that the Son would be as honored as the Father. The Pharisees wanted to make Jesus subject to their rules and power structure, but Jesus told them He is far beyond their petty authority.

We see more of who Jesus is in His own words. He is not just a teacher or prophet. He is eternal God, working in partnership with the Father, who gives Him an equal share of honor and delegates judgment to Him. We need to be sure we don’t underestimate Jesus or have a limited view of Him. We need to worship the full eternal and powerful Jesus, who despite all His strength and authority, still saw fit to come to Earth and die for us.

Having a limited view of Jesus is not really worshipping Him. The best way to better know and understand the Lord is to spend more time with Him. Commit today to spending more time in His Word and in prayer each day.
